APRILIntegrated Farming System

APRIL's Integrated Farming System (IFS) involves villages, rather than individual trainees, to stimulate community development. It aims to provide local villagers with an alternative, sustainable source of income to illegal logging, and create economically self-reliant communities.

We run four training centers where courses in horticulture and livestock rearing, freshwater fish farming, composting and waste recycling, and food processing are offered. Apart from the initial training, local farmers are also given cattle and/or fish, fertilizer, seed and pesticides to help them start their own farms. Our Field Officers provide ongoing support and advice when the initial training has been completed. To date we have trained over 2500 farmers in 85 villages in Riau.
