APRIL has officially joined the United Nations Global Compact, the world's largest voluntary corporate citizenship initiative. This move marks another significant step forward for APRIL's CSR efforts and commitment, following our participation as the Corporate Partner of UNEP's Champions of the Earth 2006, and recent achievement of being the first to attain certification from the Indonesian Ecolabelling Institute for Sustainable Forest Plantation Management. Our participation in the UN Global Compact confirms our adherence to the ten principles which drive the integration of a sustainable approach in all aspects of our operations. We are proud to support this UN initiative which upholds our own long-held belief that corporate participation plays a significant role in promoting sustainable development. Through our pledge to this initiative, we hope to lead by example and encourage more companies to join our cause in advancing responsible social and environmental principles. The UN Global Compact has been signed by more than 3,000 participants including 2,500 companies around the world and embraces 10 principles covering human rights, fair labor, the environment, and anti-corruption. The Compact, established in July 2000, seeks to promote responsible corporate citizenship by providing a framework for businesses to follow in response to the challenges of globalization. "We welcome APRIL's decision to join the Global Compact," said Georg Kell, Executive Head of the Global Compact. "We hope that this will give further momentum to the advancement of corporate responsibility in Indonesia and in the pulp and paper industry around the world."
