Flooding is a common natural disaster in Indonesia, causing damage to property and sometimes loss of life. Determined to make a difference, Adibtya Asyahri decide to study a Master’s of Water Science abroad.

After earning a Water Engineering bachelor’s degree from Brawijaya University in Malang, East Java, Indonesia in 2015, Adib got a scholarship from the European Union through the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degrees program on Flood Risk Management.

It was a unique program that gave him the chance to study towards a double Master’s degree which integrated science, engineering, and socioeconomic topics through a range of courses taught by leading experts at four European universities: the IHE Delft Institute for Water Education in Delft, The Netherlands; Technical University of Dresden in Dresden, Germany; the Polytechnic University of Catalonia in Barcelona, Spain; and the University of Ljubljana in Slovenia. He finished the thesis during a research internship at the Danish Hydraulic Institute in Horsholm, Denmark.

At the end of his studies Adib came back to Indonesia to implement his knowledge. This was when he saw big opportunities to contribute more with APRIL.

The first time Adib heard about APRIL was from his college mate in the Netherlands, who had gone on to work at the company. His friend told him that APRIL granted him the opportunity to study hydrology and hydraulics with full financial support, and that it was seeking new experts with the relevant educational background.

"At that time, I was amazed by the company's commitment to implementing sustainability in every aspect of its operations. That commitment was proven by APRIL's significant investment in people development, research development, and peatland management," Adib said, adding that after joining the company in 2018, his opinion was proven to be right.

Having dedicated 23 years of her career with RGE Group, Grace Nelwan has been heavily involved in decision making process in many precarious situations. The latest being on how to prioritize employees’ safety in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic and ensure employees productivity is maintained.

Part of the Covid-19 handling task force for APRIL Jakarta office, Grace said that from the beginning, the company has tried its best to ensure employees are protected amid challenging situations. It has not been easy, but quick and anticipatory action has resulted in new work guidelines being implemented effectively in recent months.

"We are fortunate to have the top management's full attention in formulating effective prevention efforts, and ensuring how employees remain confident, safe and keeping up the spirit at work." said Grace, who is now the GM of Talent and Development at APRIL Indonesia.

For APRIL's Fire Awareness Community Coordinator, Riana Ekawati, the most interesting yet challenging part of her job is to find long-term solutions to prevent land and forest fire in Indonesia.

In 2019, Riana took part as a fellow for the Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative (YSEALI) Professional Development Program under the theme of Sustainable Development and the Environment. This program provides the opportunity for young leaders from Southeast Asia to spend six weeks in the United States to work directly with American counterparts.

She was selected to join the YSEALI after writing an essay on the Fire-Free Village Program (FFVP), a community-based initiative started in 2014 to target the root causes of fire and encourage alternatives to slash-and-burn agricultural practices.

APRIL Group is officially certified to use the European Ecolabel logo on its paper product in the “Graphic Paper” category. This certificate is a recognition of the company’s production of environment-friendly products.

The EU Ecolabel certificate was published by the Belgium Competent Body, an independent organization responsible for evaluating, presenting awards, and managing the national application of EU Ecolabel.

The Certification & Compliance Team (C&C) Department started the journey of obtaining this certificate. The team studied EU Ecolabel standards for the paper itself, developed the system to fulfill the criteria, and then collected supporting documents including the certificate schematic similar to the Government’s Green Industry Certification.
