The Acacia trees are raised from seeds and cuttings grown in APRIL's own nurseries.
Planting is done manually as soon as land clearing/harvesting is completed.
The planting is done on APRIL's own tree plantation areas, as well as on joint-venture partners' tree plantation areas.
The company also partners with local villages in a community forestry program known as HTR program to develop tree plantations that will not only provide a source of raw material for the mill, but also generate income for the local community.
As of June 2002, APRIL and its partners have planted more than 170,000 hectares of Acacia plantations. The target is 300,000 hectares of sustainable plantation by 2008-09.
APRIL does not burn forest to clear land. In fact, APRIL's "No Burn" policy was established in 1994, three years before the Government ban on the use of fire during land preparation. This is for environmental consideration as well as to maximize the economic value of raw materials that would otherwise be destroyed by fire.
