APRIL
has three sustainable sources of wood:
a) APRIL's own tree plantations
b) Joint venture partners' tree plantation
c) Community-based forestry or HTR
plantations.
The concession areas are state-owned and are zoned for commercial tree plantation development. These concessions include previously logged over forest, abandoned slash and burn farmland, grasslands and scrub.
The community-based tree plantations are part of APRIL's community development outreach program.
While waiting for these tree plantations to be fully developed, wood residues from land clearance in conformity with the Riau province agriculture development program provides raw materials as bridging wood supply to APRIL's mill, instead of being burned as traditionally practiced during land preparation. Wood from these land clearance sources constitutes about 20% of the mill's annual total usage at present.
A major portion of the short-term bridging wood supply comes from wood generated during tree plantation development in the APRIL concessions as well as in the concession areas of its joint venture partners. This wood comprises mixed hardwood species: trees left over from previous logging, semi-clearing, slash and burn clearing etc.
By 2008/09 APRIL will be sourcing all its wood from fully sustainable plantations.
