Asia Pacific Resources International Limited (APRIL) is a leading fibre, pulp and paper manufacturer and one of the world’s largest producers of bleached hardwood kraft (BHK) pulp.
A global sales and marketing network sees APRIL’s products used in over 60 countries around the world in liquid packaging, printing and writing paper, tissues, shopping bags, food packaging, magazines and books. APRIL’s own flagship paper brand is PaperOne™ which has a fibre component made from renewable plantation sources.
Social investment, environmental conservation and contribution to economic development are integral components of APRIL's business values and actions. The company is a leader in Asia in applying best practice sustainable forestry management through a responsible, managed approach which includes the protection of High Conservation Value Forest (HCVF).
APRIL takes pride in its efforts to create long-term shared value in the communities in which it operates by responsibly transforming chosen natural resources into products that improve the quality of life for people wherever we do business.
APRIL’s first plantation development commenced in Riau Province in Sumatra, Indonesia in 1993. APRIL is now one of the world’s largest pulp and paper companies and a leading developer of fibre plantations.
Today, at the heart of APRIL’s story are two operations – in Indonesia and China – which are among the largest and most efficiently managed of their kind anywhere.
In Kerinci in Riau, APRIL commenced commercial pulp production in 1995 and commercial paper production in 1998. The 2001 completion of Pulp Line 2 brought designed capacity to two million tonnes per annum, making Kerinci home to one of the largest single pulp production lines and fastest fine paper machines in the world.
In China, APRIL’s integrated pulp and paperboard mill in Rizhao, Shandong Province commenced commercial operations in 2005 and is one of the country’s largest pulp producers. The mill is state-of-the-art and industry-leading in the China market in terms of efficient energy use and management of emissions and effluents. APRIL’s China operations are set for further expansion following the decision early in 2011 to invest in a RMB 30 billion third phase of its development.
Sustainable forestry plays a key role in Indonesia’s economic development as part of a government-sanctioned national strategy. It makes an important contribution to job creation, poverty alleviation and the improvement of health and education outcomes. At APRIL, we firmly believe we are part of the solution to the challenge of balancing environmental conservation, social and economic development.
In 2002 the company established a pulpwood sourcing and tracking policy creating a chain-of-custody system that ensures all products entering its mills come from legal and verified sources. The company also published its first sustainability report in that year. In 2005 the company voluntarily adopted its High Conservation Value Forest (HCVF) policy and conducted assessments on the Kampar Peninsula, Indonesia. Currently 19% of the concessions where our wood supply comes from in Indonesia are protected as conservation forest. While these concessions account for only 8% of designated production forest areas in Riau Province, the HCVF areas conserved by APRIL and our supply partners account for more than 25% of all conservation areas, including national parks, in the Province.
APRIL has also implemented pioneering science-based “eco-hydro” land and water management practices to maintain or improve ecological values in peatlands. The approach was developed through a three-year collaborative research programme with leading global peat, forestry and hydrologic experts and universities.
In 2007, APRIL became the first Indonesian company to join the World Business Council for Sustainable Development. In 2010 APRIL was a founding member of the Indonesia Business Council for Sustainable Development.
The company adopts a collaborative approach in working with local communities and local government. Community engagement programmes to date have focused on education, integrated farming systems, social infrastructure, healthcare and small and medium enterprise (SME) development. Since 2008, the company has awarded more than 2,700 scholarships to local students, provided free medical treatment for more than 36,000 people across 116 villages and created more than 5,000 jobs through its SME programmes.
APRIL is a member of the Royal Golden Eagle (RGE) group, one of the leading integrated resource-based privately-owned industrial groups in the Asia Pacific region.
Go to a supermarket, stationery store, bookstore or many other types of consumer outlets in dozens of countries and the chances are you will happen across an item made from an APRIL product. APRIL’S high-quality materials are used to package the milk, juice and other beverages consumed by millions of people each day, the paper used in offices and in the home, the tissues found in family bathrooms, the shopping bags and food packaging essential to weekly grocery shopping, and some of the best-read magazines and books.
In Asia, APRIL is a leading hardwood pulp supplier with more than 80% of its sales volume taken up by papermakers in the region. China is the biggest single market, followed by Korea, Indonesia, India and Japan. Two-thirds of Indonesian paper mills use APRIL pulp. Europe currently accounts for 15% of APRIL's pulp output.
APRIL's Elemental Chlorine Free (ECF) pulp is a uniform, high quality paper grade pulp produced from plantation fibre. In particular, attributes such as the high ratio of fibres to weight, lower coarseness, shorter fibre length, excellent optical properties and smooth surface, give APRIL’s acacia pulp products superb printability without the need for a high degree of refinement. Its homogenous and uniform fibre ensures the visual impact of the paper and its coating and printing quality.
The flagship APRIL paper product is PaperOneTM, a range of premium quality office paper made from plantation fibre and designed for the most demanding printing and copying tasks. PaperOneTM Presentation is a premium quality paper designed for use in all kinds of office equipment using inkjet and xerographic printing. Examples of its uses include for presentations, newsletters, proposals, books, magazines, copies, graphics, memos and reports.
