Community

At APRIL, we believe that sustainability is as much about establishing a thriving social infrastructure as it is caring for the environment.

We are a corporate partner of the Tanoto Foundation, whose philanthropic efforts are guided by four main areas of concern: Education, Poverty Alleviation, Healthcare and Disaster Relief. The Foundation seeks to reach out for a brighter future by reducing poverty and enhancing human achievements.

Our goal is to establish an independent and self-reliant community through harmonious partnerships among surrounding villages, towns, educational institutions, local government and non-governmental organisations.

This commitment is enacted through various programmes and participation in multi-stakeholder initiatives, including our adherence to the UN Global Compact.

We recognise that the scale of our operations comes with a level of influence in our locations, which we use to promote development and advance sustainable growth largely through our contributions to the economy and to the creation of employment opportunities. In addition, our Community Development programmes further enable us to make a positive impact on the poverty situation in the province of Riau.

In 2005, we received top recognitions for our programmes in the Indonesian Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Awards both in the social and environmental categories. These serve to reinforce our resolve to continue our involvement with the community.

Community Development Programmes
As a leading economic force within Riau Province and the major employer in Pangkalan Kerinci, we readily accept our social responsibility to foster an economically vibrant community.

Our Community Development programmes provide participants with practical knowledge and livelihood skills. These programmes include the Integrated Farming System, the Community Fibre Farm Programme, the Micro, Small and Medium-Sized Enterprise Programme, Educational Support, Medical Care Services, Socio-Economic Benefits and Land Conflicts Resolutions.

We also offer vocational training courses-ranging from dressmaking and hairdressing to welding and electronics-to equip the local community with practical skills for the modern job market.
