Part of our efforts in establishing a thriving self-reliant local community lies in providing adequate social infrastructure support. These initiatives range from providing educational support, improving health care services to supplying electricity at a subsidized rate to the state electric company, the installation of street lighting and the repair of roads. We have also established land claim resolution procedures to help settle any land disputes in a peaceful manner. These procedures have been submitted for independent audits to help us maintain an open and fair working system.
Since 2003, we have seen a considerable increase in the number of donations granted to schools requesting for help in defraying special project and other operational costs. Apart from the construction of new school buildings and donation of school equipment, APRIL also offers scholarships and teaching grants to both students and teachers. Since the program started in 1999, we have granted honoraria to 1,107 teachers in rural schools in six districts.
