Empowering Women: Kartika Pupusta’s Journey in the Forestry Sector

Kartini’s enduring legacy resonates strongly with Indonesian women today, inspiring them to embody her determined spirit in various aspects of their lives. One of the modern-day Kartini is Kartika Pupusta, a 25-year-old, Plantation Assistant at APRIL Group's Ukui Estate.

Without knowing anyone in Kalimantan, the second child of three siblings left Medan, North Sumatra, where her family resides, to pursue a degree in Forestry from Palangkaraya University in Central Kalimantan in 2016.

Undeterred by challenges, she embraced independence to realize her aspirations. Encouraged by her family, particularly her supportive mother, Kartika ventured into the plantation sector, traditionally dominated by men.

Kartika participated in a six-month training period under the Assistant Trainee Program, eventually passing and becoming APRIL’s Plantation Assistant for Ukui Estate, approximately four hours from Pekanbaru.

As a plantation assistant, Kartika ensures all plantations thrive and are free from pests and diseases. Navigating a predominantly male environment posed its own set of challenges for Kartika. Yet, she embraced the journey, recognizing the importance of adaptation and integration within her team.

She recalled her first experience riding a large bike through slippery hill roads. But Kartika knows that it’s part of her job, so she continues learning despite the challenges. Now, Kartika can proudly say that she has conquered it.

Despite the demands of her profession, Kartika finds solace and fulfilment amidst the welcoming community at the Ukui Estate. APRIL Group’s Ukui Estate is also home to seven Sumatran elephants, nurtured in the elephant conservation unit, preserving the wildlife as part of APRIL’s commitment.

“The people here are really nice; I love meeting them. The best part is that after a tiring workday, I can heal myself by seeing elephants,” said Kartika.

Moreover, Kartika highlighted the company’s commitment to fostering inclusivity and providing avenues for female participation in the plantation sector. From being the sole Gen-Z woman in her field upon joining, Kartika now witnesses a growing cohort of female colleagues at the Ukui Estate.

As an advocate for perseverance and empowerment, Kartika aspires to inspire women to pursue their dreams, drawing parallels to Kartini's positive impact on Indonesian women.

"Women are powerful. Be not afraid. If you are determined to achieve your desires, success is within reach. Consider this sector a viable career option, regardless of your educational background; all are welcome,” said Kartika.
